That the universe is statistically isotropic when averaged over large scales is a foundational `principle’ of the standard cosmological model. Recent surveys of the distribution of galaxies & radio sources and studies of the relic cosmic microwave background radiation now make it possible to test this observationally - with some intriguing results.
