The International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS-TIFR) dedicated the Balasubramanian Family - ICTS City Residence at a special ceremony held on 5 June 2026. The residence, located in Halasuru, Bengaluru, is a generous gift from the Balasubramanian family to ICTS, and will support the Centre's scientific activities by providing accommodation for visiting scientists, scholars, and academic guests in Bengaluru.
The event was attended by members of the ICTS community, including faculty, staff, students, and scientific visitors. Members of the Balasubramanian family joined the celebration both in person and virtually, including Smt. Jaya Balasubramanian and Shri T. R. Balasubramanian, Prof. Vijay Balasubramanian, Prof. Heather Sharkey, and their children, Aruna and Ravi Balasubramanian.
Speaking on the occasion, ICTS Centre Director Prof. Rajesh Gopakumar highlighted the importance of philanthropic support in advancing scientific research and strengthening institutions.
Shri T. R. Balasubramanian and Smt. Jaya Balasubramanian expressed their happiness that the residence would continue to serve a meaningful purpose and contribute, in their words, “in a modest way to the cause of science in India.” Prof. Vijay Balasubramanian, Prof. Heather Sharkey, and their children, Aruna and Ravi Balasubramanian, reflected on the many family memories associated with the residence across generations and shared their hope that it would become a welcoming home for visiting researchers and their families, fostering learning, collaboration, and scientific exchange for years to come.
The highlight of the event was the unveiling and dedication of the commemorative plaque, formally marking the Balasubramanian Family - ICTS City Residence.
