Abstract
In this talk, I will establish the importance of lateral propagation of gravity waves in the context of setting stratospheric variability, such as the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation. I will introduce a toy model for overlapping idealized gravity waves to show that interference can bias estimates of momentum transport by these waves. I will also discuss some of the logistics of training machine learning models to "learn" the effects of these waves on the resolved flow.
