Public health surveillance is fundamental to the prevention, early detection, and control of infectious diseases. The ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology (ICMR-NIE) runs a diverse portfolio of surveillance and implementation research spanning zoonotic, vector-borne, respiratory, and acute febrile illnesses. This talk offers an overview of selected projects illustrating how surveillance systems can be designed, strengthened, and translated into evidence for public health action.
I will present our One Health surveillance work aimed at detecting zoonotic spillover at high-risk animal-human interfaces, including bird sanctuaries, wetlands, and slaughterhouses, alongside surveillance studies on Acute Febrile Illness (AFI) and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), and routine dengue surveillance conducted as part of an All-India Laboratory Surveillance Network.
Across these projects, I aim to show how integrating laboratory science, environmental data, and analytical approaches can strengthen infectious disease surveillance and preparedness. The talk will close with a discussion of opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration in surveillance analytics and infectious disease modelling.
