AI is rapidly changing nearly every field of science, and cryptography—my own field—is no exception. But the interaction between cryptography and AI goes well beyond using AI to solve problems in cryptography. One of cryptography’s lasting contributions is a set of definitional frameworks that help us formalize and reason about seemingly nebulous ideas such as security, privacy, fairness, and knowledge—or the lack of it. Another is a set of mechanisms that allow a computationally limited party to achieve certain goals despite meddling by a much more powerful “adversary.” Through a few examples, I’ll explain why both of these contributions have an important role to play in the emerging field of trustworthy AI.
