Abstract
We will give a brief introduction to Bruhat-Tits theory through the example G = SL(2, F), where F is a non-Archimedean local field. We will then use it to discuss a proof of Ihara's theorem, which says that any torsion-free discrete subgroup of SL(2, Q_p) is free.
