Abstract
We will study how the seemingly chaotic zoo of special functions—Bessel, hypergeometric, and beyond—can be brought into order through integral representations and averaging principles. This perspective reveals that the vast families of functions that we know of are, in essence, repeated averages of a few simple seed functions. Furthermore, we will point to a deep categorical and motivic structure underlying the taxonomy of special functions.
