Abstract

Human intelligence is tightly linked to a particular class of proteins – glutamate receptors – that are known to be involved in a variety of cognitive traits such as learning and problem-solving. Glutamate receptors are located primarily in the cell membranes of neuronal and glial cells in the brain. Their activation leads to signalling processes that are key to the modulation of synaptic plasticity, a property that is considered crucial for memory and learning. Thus, understanding human intelligence at a molecular level requires understanding how glutamate receptors work. In this chalk-talk I will outline a practical and systematic framework to study the glutamate receptor family, along with new methodologies I have already developed, and some methodologies I plan to develop, to bring this project to fruition. In addition, I will briefly touch upon the groundwork I have already laid to kick-off the project.
