Abstract

In holographic approaches to renormalization, the UV and IR regions of the geometry are coupled and information and excitations can pass between them.  Motivated by this, we study the dynamics of the density matrix of weakly coupled field theories for long-wavelength modes, upon implementing a suitable time averaging procedure, and describe the computation in perturbation theory.  We then apply this to modes with a continuum of high-energy modes; for the Caldeira-Leggett model and for scalar QFTs in dimensions above four, we find divergences in the non-Hamiltonian parts of the master equation that have not been addressed, and we show that these divergences ensure that the Heisenberg equations of motion close on renormalized composite operators.
