The proposed workshop addresses the intersection of scientific disciplines of global interest: coastal oceanography, air-sea-land interactions in coastal regions, monsoon dynamics, and climate extremes, with a focus on the Indian Ocean region and global relevance. The focus is on short time-scale weather variability from hours to weeks to months, though inter-annual variability is also of interest. By integrating theoretical advances, numerical modeling, and observational approaches, the program aligns with key priorities in ocean and climate science, including ocean, land, and atmospheric interactions that influence weather, high-impact severe weather events, monsoon fluctuations between active/wet and suppressed/dry phases, and decadal-scale climate variability. This multidisciplinary approach is essential for addressing knowledge gaps and improving predictive capabilities in river and estuary hydrology, coastal ocean processes, and their feedback on weather and climate. The program will be held in two parts: a hands-on workshop during January 18-25, 2027, and a three-day discussion meeting during January 27-29, 2027.

The theme is especially timely due to:

• Rapid advances in observing technology and modeling techniques.
• Increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events linked to climate change, particularly in vulnerable coastal and monsoon-affected regions.
• The need for integrated, cross-disciplinary research to support climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable coastal resource management.
• International initiatives, including the UN Decade of Ocean Science, WMO monsoon research programs, and Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), and Indian initiatives such as Monsoon Mission and Mission Mausam, which prioritize these topics and foster global collaboration.

Eligibility Criteria : The hands-on workshop (January 18-25, 2027) is targeted towards graduate students and early-career scientists, working on research topics that are related to the workshop themes. The discussion meeting (January 27-29, 2027) is open to the larger research community working on the workshop themes. The eligibility criteria will be based on a write-up of the academic background, current research, recommendation letter(s) and the suitability of the abstract (in case of discussion meeting).

Accommodation will be provided for outstation participants at our on campus guest house.
