ICTS invites applications from highly motivated candidates interested in pursuing doctoral research in the theoretical and mathematical sciences. Current research at ICTS is in the areas of astrophysical relativity, statistical physics and turbulence, string theory and quantum gravity, and dynamical systems and data assimilation. Presently we are taking students for Integrated Ph.D and Ph.D programs in physics. Entry to ICTS is through the TIFR entrance exam or JEST (Rank between 1-60) followed by an interview at ICTS.
JEST qualified students need to apply directly to ICTS (see below).
Integrated Ph.D students will have to do two years of coursework before they begin their Ph.D work. Students selected for the Ph.D program will have to go through about one and half years of coursework. On successful completion of coursework, students can choose their line of research and register for their Ph.D. Some details of graduate course work can be found here (Ph.D course details). The students will receive a degree through the Physics Subject Board of the Graduate School of TIFR.
STIPEND:
Ph.D : Students receive a monthly scholarship of Rs 16,000/- (enhanced to Rs 18,000/- after registration) and an annual contingency grant of Rs 20,000/-.
Integrated Ph.D : Students receive a monthly scholarship of Rs 16,000/- (enhanced to Rs 18,000/- from third year onwards, subject to passing the Comprehensive Exam / registration ) and an annual contingency grant of Rs 20,000/-.
Accommodation is provided to Ph.D. and Integrated Ph.D. students at a nominal cost.
ELIGIBILITY:
For Ph.D.: M.Sc.(Physics)/B.Tech. (Engineering Physics)
For I-Ph.D.: B.Sc./B.E./M.E./M.Tech./B.Chem. or equivalent degree in Science / Engineering / Medicine, M.Sc. (not in Physics)/B.Tech. (not in Engineering Physics).
ADMISSION PROCEDURE:
Selected candidates (based on their earlier academic performance and in the qualifying tests mentioned above) will be called for a personal interview to be held at ICTS-TIFR, Bangalore.
