Abstract

The daily and seasonal cycles of weather and climate are set by the movement of the sun across the sky. In addition, earth’s climate (atmosphere, ocean, ice…) also has modes of “internal” variability with distinct space-time scales. The time scales of monsoon variability are not independent of one another - sub-seasonal (10-60 day) variations, year-to-year fluctuations of summer rainfall and the multi-decadal changes in monsoon rainfall are closely related.

Observations often show coherent variability in the monsoon atmosphere and ocean, linked by sea surface temperature (SST) and planetary-scale propagating waves. I present examples of coherent sub-seasonal fluctuations of rainfall, surface winds, ocean currents, temperature and salinity; and links between the multi-decadal changes of monsoon rain and SST of distant ocean basins.
