Abstract

It has been recognized in recent years that the theory of analytic functions defined on multiply connected domains can play a central role in the solution of a variety of problems in applied mathematics. In this talk, we present applications to selected free boundary problems in fluid dynamics. Two problems will be discussed (a) the incompressible and compressible solutions for hollow vortex (a type of finite-area vortex) flows; and (b) the motion of multiple interacting bubbles in a Hele-Shaw channel. The solutions are obtained through conformal mapping methods, which will be outlined.
