Science is not only beautiful but is also the fulcrum on which the strong crowbar of national missions, security, and our very future can rest, allowing modest investment to lift huge loads. This fulcrum must be strong and correctly placed. Today, it is poorly positioned and not strong enough. Scientists are asked to engage and solve problems from dengue to cancer, grow more crops, clean the environment and build aircraft. Scientists reply that this will happen if there is more investment in quality-education and research and that our bureaucratic processes are stifling. Such wrongly posed statements generate more heat than light. Science and society are intertwined. Investing in the today and in the future by strengthening the fulcrum of science and by positioning it correctly is what is needed and what we have embarked on.
