I will try and present an editor's perspective on the ever evolving relationship between researchers, scientific journals, the broader scientific community and science journalists. Using a historical and cultural perspective to motivate the role that journals such as PRL have come to play, I will try and emphasize our present objectives and how we are trying to go about achieving them. As part of the talk I will also give an ''insider's view'' of the editorial process and comment on the symbiotic - sometimes whimsical but always crucial -relationship between our readers, authors and referees.
