Lecture1: Scaling concepts in elasto-plasticity or how to make sense of a numerical simulation

19 January, 2010

Lecture 2: Structural change and glassy behavior

Outline

The glass transition; ergodicity in generic models with soft potentials; statistical mechanics of the glass transition; quasi-species and their temperature dependence; static length associated with the temporal slowing down; mechanism for the slowing down and predictions of thermodynamic functions. The dynamics of correlation functions.

Properties of amorphous solids: elasticity and plasticity; critical assessment of present models; athermal elasto-plasticity; scaling laws for shear modulus, magnitude of plastic events; the effect of temperature. Predicting plasticity on the basis of elastic linear and nonlinear moduli.
