Summer Courses
Speaker
Dr. Akshit Goyal (ICTS-TIFR) and Dr. Brato Chakrabarti (ICTS-TIFR)
Date & Time
22 May 2024 to 21 June 2024
Venue
Emmy Noether Seminar Room, ICTS Bengaluru

In this summer course, undergraduates will delve into the fascinating world of biological dynamics. We will explore how tools from physics can help explain the behaviours of complex living systems. We will understand what is required for predator-prey populations to oscillate, for multi-species ecosystems to show chaos, and for microscopic organisms to swim. Using principles from nonlinear dynamics, statistical physics, and fluid dynamics, students will learn to model and predict phenomena like species competition, population catastrophes, bacterial motility, and collective behaviour in fluidic environments. The course will be pedagogical in nature and assume no biological knowledge, and is aimed at introducing students to biological physics.

Schedule:

May 2024- 22, 24, 29, 31

June 2024 - 12, 14, 19, 21

Time: 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM

A few tutorials may be announced as and when needed.

This course will be conducted in hybrid mode (including lectures and tutorials). Students can choose either classroom or online participation. More details will be shared separately with the selected candidates.

Participants will not be provided any financial support and local hospitality for attending the course.

Registration will close on 10 May 2024
